Engineer Víctor Hernández, or Superintendent known in the field as the “Greenkeeper,” participated in the first edition of the Mexico Golf Show, an event organized by the Mexican Golf Federation (FMG) which brings together more than 50 businesses specializing in the latest cutting-edge technology for golf courses.

“We have not used chemical pesticides on the greens area at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Golf Club since April of 2013, and we have established biological pest control with living organisms, where we utilize the biotechnology on approximately 1.52 hectares and we’re working every day to spread it to the rest of the course”stated Engineer Hernández.

The work that he does is a testament to the credentials he earned from the Department of Agricultural Parasitology at the Chapingo Autonomous University (UACh). Year after year, the university sends several of its students to undertake pre-professional internships at Bahia Principe. Teachers and doctors from this academic institution also come on study visits to learn more about these sustainable practices.

“At Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Golf Club we have a monoculture turf of the same genus and species (SeaShore Paspalum vaginatum Platimun T.E.), water management and use is done through the proper irrigation system according to the time of year, and harmful pests are monitored and controlled, not eradicated> We don’t fumigate, we spray with specific control systems that are friendly to the environment and do not affect the golf course’s ecosystem. Our philosophy is to work for the benefit of the environment, as well as for each of our 23 workers and guests. Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Golf Club is a nature sanctuary where you can see a large variety of beneficial insects, birds and indigenous animal species, as well as the majestic freshwater well near Hole 6” commented the Engineer.

It should be noted that PROFEPA (Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection) performs audits in which they inspect all the chemical substances used on golf courses, and these inspections are carried out without giving any prior notice. At Bahia Principe we can be proud that we are undertaking sustainable maintenance management and environmentally responsible conservation practices.
