  • The American overcame Mexico's Oscar Fraustro on the second tie-breaking hole, crowning himself as the winner of this tournament closing the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. 

  • Brandon Matthews finished the tournament as leader of the tour's Order of Merit, becoming Player of the Year and taking home the Roberto de Vicenzo Trophy. 

    Madrid, July 26, 2021. The "Bupa Championship presented by Volvo" tournament was held yesterday, under strict safety and hygiene measures, at the PGA Riviera Maya Golf Course, located within the Tulum Country Club residential complex.  

    With this splendid backdrop, Patrick Newcomb, aged 31, was the big winner and received the trophy from the head of the Office of the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Quintana Roo, Maestro Andrés Aguilar and Fernando Lledó, Director of Bupa Mexico, after more than 6 hours of play and a two-hole tee-off with Mexico's Oscar Fraustro.  Both players completed the 72 holes with a total of 283 strokes, 5 under par. 

    Fernando Padrón, PGA Riviera Maya Golf General Director, was in charge of welcoming all the guests to this final and thanked head of the Office of the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Quintana Roo, Maestro Andrés Aguilar, Liliana Arauz, Director of Communication of the Ministry of Tourism, Darío Flota, Director of the State Tourism Promotion Council, Keren Hapuc Ríos, Director of Social Communication of the State Tourism Promotion Council and Fernando Mora, Director of Communication of the State Government, for their presence at this very special event for the destination. It is the first time that this final is played in Mexican territory. 

  • He also thanked all the attendees, players, organizers, sponsors, media, staff and, above all, Todd Rhinehart, Executive Director of PGA Tour Latinoamerica and his team for trusting PGA Riviera Maya to host this important tournament. 

    The trophy presentation took place at hole number 9 of the PGA Riviera Maya executive course, where Andrés Aguilar, head of the Office of the Ministry of Tourism of the State, said "I am very happy to attend this event full of excitement and happy that events such as the Bupa Championship presented by Volvo are held in the Mexican Caribbean, and I want to thank PGA Latinoamerica for holding this tournament and congratulate PGA Riviera Maya for the organization.” 

    The winner, Patrick Newcomb, who was very moved by the win, thanked: “First of all my family for their support in these difficult times, my coach, the authorities, everyone who made this tournament possible, the PGA Riviera Maya golf course for its great facilities and course conditions, being a great challenge for all the players. It has been an amazing week and I will enjoy the trophy very much.”  

    Frenchman Jeremy Gandon ended up with a course total of 286 strokes, 2 under par. To round out the top 5, in addition to Oscar Fraustro, were the Americans Andrew Alligood, who led the first 54 holes, and Ben Cook.  

    Brandon Matthews finished the Bupa Championship presented by Volvo tied for 33rd place thanks to a cumulative 8-over-par 296. This result allowed him to maintain his position as leader of the Order of Merit of the PGA Latinoamerica Tour. His two victories this year at the Puerto Plata Open and The Club at Weston Hills Open earned him Player of the Year honors. The 26-year-old took home the Roberto De Vicenzo trophy and earned full conditions for the Korn Ferry Tour 2022. 

    Joining Matthews in qualifying for the Korn Ferry Tour were Sam Stevens, winner of the Holcim Colombia Classic, Conner Godsey, winner of the Banco del Pacífico Open, Álvaro Ortiz, winner of the Abierto Mexicano de Golf and MJ Maguire, winner of the Shell Open.
